They are the reason why the sound of bleating goats make the people of The Netherlands shudder with fear. They are shrouded in myth and legend and their frightful story was enough reason to write a song. Released on the 17th of October, Bart Zeal and Voddemoêr present: “De Bokkenrijders”.
“The goat riders” would be the literal translation. Not ghost riders, but goat riders. It doesn’t sound all that scary when you hear it, but some Southerners tremble at the very name!
These creeps are part of both fairy tales and real history, with the line between the two blurring ever more. Their mythical story: It is the 18th century in the South of The Netherlands and Belgium. A band of 500 merciless cutthroat bandits ravage the lands; violently extorting, stealing, and burning everything in their path for fifty years on end. These criminals had a greedy and most terrible leader at their front; Hugo van den Loonsche Duynen… He dared to steal from the Abbey of Postel, a heinous act against God, for which he paid the ultimate price; he was cursed to never know peace again. Not in his house, nor anywhere else. It is also part of one of the attractions at The Efteling, where Hugo himself tells his story (in Dutch) to you while you wait for the ride through his haunted house “Villa Volta” to begin.
This song was written from the perspective of the common folk and was made in collaboration with the amazing Dutch Folk band “Voddemoêr”. They dust off old Dutch folk songs and upgrade their tune to the point where entire theaters get up from their chairs to dance and twirl. Some highlights of this track include the mandoline played by Stan Eimers, the flute played by Remy Schreuder, and the female vocals of Robin Hielke. The instrumental version of this song is my absolute favorite instrumental of any song we’ve ever done! They definitely carry that!
