We released “Woe on the Wind” on the 20th of August. Let me tell you something about the making of this track!
Woe on the Wind is a rebelsong. It kicks against a system in which politicians make promises of positive change, but rarely stay true to their word. It does so in an empowering way. In that sense, it is a very critical song, but it is set on a reinforcing tune, creating an overall positive and empowering message that tells the listener; You are strong! Whatever happens in the storms around you, you will remain strong and will be able to weather it all, no matter how much they try to push or pull you. They come and go, but you will understand and endure.
The cover art was made by my fiancée Eline in a collage style. The fox in the center is a wink to Isembard’s Wheel, whose singer fights against the fox hunts in Britain. It shows the fox in the center, distracted by a television that is hung in front of it, while factories encroach on his habitat and dogs are about to attack. The skull behind it summarizes the whole thing; if we keep going like this, we’re going to end up dead!
It features Alexander Isembard, which by now seems to be a regular guest to our show. Most of his work are protest songs so it was the perfect match for my own similar work. Marlieske also played a role here again on her violin. The recordings went very smoothly with her and Tom from Audioscape was able to mix it all together in no time at all.
Now, if you haven’t already; we’d be grateful if you’d have a listen!
LYRICS
You might be at rock bottom
And you’re sure that you’re nowhere near the top
How wide the gap has gotten
the haves and the have nots
But you, you are a rock in water
And I am a howling wind
Together we speak of woe now and let them know:
the end is to begin
and I sing:
A different day with different politicians
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
A different voice, same beguilement
oehoehoeh, same beguilement!
Won’t let them sway me into submission
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
They are the same, the same old same old.
oehoehoeh, same old same old!
I don’t serve any master, I am free
and I don’t own any land, I’ll have you know
Now, stand and deliver. Yes I’ll let you know
we’re raising our right hand;
And here we swear to let the wind speak of woe now,
and shake you like a leaf
And as you stand and tremble
You listen to me
while I sing
A different day with different politicians
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
A different voice, same beguilement
oehoehoeh, same beguilement!
Won’t let them sway me into submission
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
They are the same, the same old same old.
oehoehoeh, same old same old!
A different day with different politicians
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
A different voice, same beguilement
oehoehoeh, same beguilement!
Won’t let them sway me into submission
Oehoehoeh, oehoe oehoe,
They are the same, the same old same old.
oehoehoeh, same old same old!
